Landmark Papers on Higgs Boson freely available online on ScienceDirect
- 11 Sep 2012

Physics Letters B, Elsevier's flagship journal in high energy physics, has announced that the observations of the long-sought Higgs particle, hailed as one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time, have been published. The papers 'Observation of a new boson at a mass of 125 GeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC' and 'Observation of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC' are freely available online on ScienceDirect.

In July 2012, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva announced they had captured a new particle that may be the elusive Higgs boson in two gigantic experiments, ATLAS and CMS, both of which independently confirmed the particle's existence. A world-wide collaboration of more than 5,000 researchers contributed to the discovery.

The existence of the Higgs particle was first predicted in 1964 by three groups of leading physicists independently — François Englert and Robert Brout in August, Peter Higgs in October, and Gerald Guralnik, C. R. Hagen, and Tom Kibble (GHK) in November. Its discovery completes the Standard Model of particle physics and, most importantly, validates the theories developed over the last 50 years explaining how elementary particles can have mass.

Physics Letters B is the flagship journal in high energy physics. The journal will change from a subscription based model into an open access model by the start of 2014. The journal has been included in SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics), a new model for open access publishing. Benefits of publishing in Physics Letters B as part of the SCOAP3 model include perpetual open access, no charges to authors, wide re-use licenses as well as reduction and re-direction of subscription fees to centrally cover for article processing charges in participating journals.

AIP applied physics journals top Thomson Reuters rankings again in 2009
- 21 Jun 2010

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has announced that AIP journals produced nearly one quarter of the articles in the Applied Physics category last year, and received almost 40 percent of all the cited references in the category. These numbers are among the figures reported in the 2009 Journal Citation Reports Science Edition (Thomson Reuters, 2010).

The journals Applied Physics Letters (APL) and Journal of Applied Physics (JAP) once again ranked as the first and second most highly cited journals in their category. APL (apl.aip.org), the most highly cited journal in Applied Physics, garnered 186,353 citations during 2009 and JAP (jap.aip.org) received 115,445.

AIP has also announced the results of JCR rankings for a number of its other highly respected publications. The Journal of Chemical Physics was the most highly cited of the 33 journals in Atomic, Molecular, and Chemical Physics, coming close to equaling the total number of citations of the next three journals combined. Biomicrofluidics saw a 25 percent jump in impact factor to 2.895, placing it in the top 5 in Fluids & Plasmas in just its second year being tracked by Thomson Reuters.

AIP's flagship magazine, Physics Today also saw a significant rise in its impact factor of more than 20 percent to 4.437. Physics of Plasmas was again the most highly cited journal dedicated entirely to plasma physics. Physics of Fluids was the second most highly cited of the 123 journals in Mechanics and the third most highly cited of 28 journals in Fluids & Plasmas. Review of Scientific Instruments is the third most highly cited of the 56 journals in Instruments & Instrumentation. Journal of Mathematical Physics enjoyed a more than 20 percent increase in its impact factor.

Journal of Physics A announces special issue on entanglement entropy
- 17 Dec 2009

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical, published by non-profit scientific publisher Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing, UK, has announced the publication of a special issue on entanglement entropy in extended quantum systems. The special issue is free-to-read until July 1, 2010.

Entanglement entropy has been revealed to be a fruitful probe of quantum properties of many-body systems and of quantum field theory. Its connections to many diverse areas of theoretical physics have developed very rapidly. Yet, many aspects are still to be studied, and it is a subject of intensive research worldwide. The review articles is this special issue, guest edited by Pasquale Calabrese, John Cardy and Benjamin Doyon, seek to provide an assessment of progress in the field.

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical reports research on the mathematical structures that describe fundamental processes of the physical world and on the analytical, computational and numerical methods for exploring these structures. Each issue of the journal is split into six sections. This includes statistical physics; chaotic and complex systems; mathematical physics; quantum mechanics and quantum information theory; classical and quantum field theory; and fluid and plasma theory.
