Universities and Libraries Move to the Mobile Web

(educause.edu): The convergence of web-enabled smartphones, the applications designed for smartphone interfaces, and cloud computing is rapidly changing how people interact with each other and with their environments. Libraries evolve into information clearinghouses

(nctimes.com): Libraries, long recognized as book lenders, are evolving along with changing reading habits and new technology to become information clearinghouses, offering services as diverse as free passes for museums, e-book loans, housing clinics and live performances. Libraries are also trying to provide a bulwark against the economic erosion of the recession. The senator -- a frequent critic of the pharmaceutical and medical device industries and their relationships with academia -- also released a report on medical and scientific journal ghostwriting, compiled by Senate Finance Committee staff. Grassley is the panel's senior Republican.

The Evolution of Social Networking

(knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu): Social networking tools such as Twitter and the emerging Google Wave web application are taking individuals and organizations to the frontiers of real-time communication and collaboration. The technology has the potential to make it easier to discover and share information, interact with others, and decide what to buy or do. But the key word is "potential": Social networking's evolution is still in its early stages. What makes the current crop of services more promising than those that came before? What are the obstacles to further progress?
